Andara Combined School is located in Andara, Namibia in the Kavango Region. The school serves between 600-700 students each year, fewer than half of them girls. The village is plagued by unemployment, alcoholism and poverty. To battle this, scholarships are awarded each year to offer an education to girls showing promise in the classroom.
What do our first students and administrators think of this program?
When given the opportunity to visit the coast for the first time, we were told,
“Wow! A fantastic place! Everything’s so different from home, here the lights [are] so much brighter and [the] air seems fresher. But then Swakopmund’s cooler and not so dusty.”
-Mahongo Gisela; grade 8; Andara Combined School learner on a field trip to the coast
“I tried to bring learners back to school [who had dropped out]. But there was nothing at home… Yeah, I think [offering a food incentive to families to keep their kids in school] is a good idea.”
-Isabel S., Social Studies Teacher
“Thanks for taking one of my learners into your scholarship. I am happy for her.”
-Servasius N., English Teacher
